Philodendron mamei is a true philodendron from Ecuador in the Araceae family. Its green, heart-shaped leaves are marked with scattered silver patterns or patches, giving the leaf surface a dimensional appearance that rewards close observation. The visibility of the silver pattern may change with leaf age, light, and growing conditions, so assess several leaves on the same plant. The stem develops according to the space available, and the container or support can be arranged to match its growth direction. It suits a warm, softly lit tropical foliage display.
Grow it in bright indirect light and an airy growing medium that retains moderate moisture. Wait until the surface has dried slightly before watering thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Avoid direct summer sun and never leave the pot standing in water. Provide support in the direction the plant is actually growing without burying the young shoot. Wipe dust from the leaves to help them receive light and check for mites or other pests. Apply diluted fertilizer only while new leaves are developing, and reduce water when light is low or temperatures are cool. Wear gloves when pruning because the sap may irritate the skin, and keep the plant away from children and pets.
