Phama Haek Kuk banana, scientifically known as Musa (ABB group) 'Phama Haek Kuk', is a rare local cultivar with distinctive traits and an intriguing legend, as follows:
Botanical characteristics
Genome group: ABB, a hybrid with a higher contribution from the B genome (Musa balbisiana) than the A genome (Musa acuminata), resulting in greater hardiness and a higher starch content.
Pseudostem: Approximately 2.5–3 m tall, sturdy; the outer sheaths are light green with slight dark blotching.
Fruit: Larger than Hak Muk-type bananas, with an oval shape and thick peel; turns golden yellow when ripe.
Texture and flavor: Fine, dense yellow-orange flesh with a sweet, aromatic, rich flavor and a chewier texture than Namwa bananas.
