Musa (AAA Group) Cavendish Subgroup is a subgroup name for cultivated bananas with the AAA genome, not a single cultivar that should be placed in quotation marks. The MGIS and ProMusa catalogs use Cavendish subgroup for a group containing several clones, including Dwarf Cavendish and Grand Naine. This entry therefore refers to a member of the Cavendish group without specifying a particular clone. Height, bunch characteristics, and fruit details may vary by clone, so do not assume fixed values from the word Cavendish alone. If specific production characteristics are required, request the clone name and mother-plant source.
Members of this group should be grown according to general banana practice, with warm air, high light, deep well-drained soil containing organic matter, and consistent water without flooding. Leave room for the clump to spread its leaves and reduce wind that can tear leaves or topple the plant. Retain healthy sword suckers for clump renewal and remove excess suckers so they do not compete for resources. Cavendish clones can be partly distinguished by pseudostem height, but evaluation should be made when the plant is mature and its source history is known. Select clean suckers or tissue-cultured plants because asexual propagation can carry diseases from the mother plant into a new field.
