Musa 'Papua New Guinea' is a trade name referring to Papua New Guinea and is suited to collections of tropical bananas. It forms a clump from a rhizome, develops a pseudostem from leaf sheaths, and produces large leaves above the crown. As it matures, it needs room for the canopy to expand and should not be placed next to a walkway. Leaf color, pseudostem color, and clump size may change with age and growing conditions. Keep the Papua New Guinea name on the plant label so future suckers remain linked to the original clump.
Provide high light, warm air, deep soil rich in organic matter, and consistent water without allowing the rhizome to remain submerged. Young plants should begin in filtered light and be moved into more sun gradually once the new leaves are strong. Choose a wind-sheltered position because broad leaves tear easily, although tearing does not necessarily indicate disease. Apply fertilizer in small doses and mulch the soil to retain moisture. When many suckers develop, retain those positioned well for clump renewal. Cut dry leaves with clean tools and attach the Papua New Guinea label to every new sucker as soon as it is separated and planted.
