Begonia rex is a rhizomatous begonia in the Begoniaceae family and a true tropical foliage plant native from southern Bhutan to northern Myanmar. It forms a low clump with naturally asymmetrical, obliquely oval leaves. The upper surface is metallic green with silver bands, while the underside has reddish tones. Its beauty lies in the leaf texture and color arrangement rather than the flowers, which are usually small, pale-pink clusters. Its compact form makes it suitable for a shelf or tabletop where the leaf details can be viewed up close.
Place it in filtered bright light and avoid direct sun, especially afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaf margins. Use an airy, well-drained growing medium. Water thoroughly around the base without allowing water to stand, and avoid keeping the leaves or central crown wet. Maintain fairly high humidity together with good air circulation, and reduce watering during cool weather by allowing the surface to dry before the next watering. For propagation, use a healthy mature leaf or divide the rhizome. Handle and wipe the leaves gently because their surface and margins are easily damaged.
