Astrophytum myriostigma is a round to short-cylindrical cactus with distinct ribs and few or no spines. Its surface may be covered with fine white scales, giving it an appearance reminiscent of a bishop's cap. The symmetrical stem is its main feature, while yellow flowers develop near the crown when the plant is mature and conditions are suitable. The number of ribs and density of the white scales may vary between plants, so appreciate the balance of the ribs, surface, and crown rather than expecting every plant to look identical. With sufficient light, it retains a compact form instead of becoming elongated, but moving it abruptly from shade into intense sun can cause permanent scorch marks.
Plant it in an open, mineral-rich medium that drains quickly, using a pot that does not retain moisture for long. Water thoroughly when the medium is dry, then allow it to drain completely. Avoid water standing around the base and reduce watering during cool weather or when growth has stopped. Place it in a bright, well-ventilated position and rotate the pot periodically so the stem receives balanced light. It suits a collector's display where the ribs and surface markings can be seen clearly. Keep the crown dry and clean, watch for soft areas or color changes, and adjust watering before increasing fertilizer, because maintaining healthy roots is more important than forcing faster growth.
