Alocasia sanderiana is a true Alocasia from the Philippines, with long arrowhead-shaped leaves, dark green color, sharply contrasting pale veins, and wavy margins. These features give the clump a crisp, distinctive appearance even in a container. New leaves may change in color and proportions as they mature, so assess the form from several leaves together. The plant produces leaves from underground tissue and raises them on petioles as a clump. It suits a tropical foliage corner with soft light, warmth, and enough room for the leaves to spread without rubbing against walkways.
Grow it in bright filtered light, warm air, and moderate humidity with good ventilation. The growing medium should be airy, drain after watering, and still retain moisture around the roots. Wait until the surface has dried slightly before watering and never leave the pot standing in water. Reduce water and fertilizer when cool weather slows growth. If the leaves collapse, keep the underground portion warm and only slightly moist until new growth begins. Check the undersides of leaves for spider mites and the petiole joints for pests. Increase light gradually to reduce scorch, and wear gloves when pruning because aroid sap may irritate the skin.
